NGA is pleased to announce the launch of new AIA-accredited offerings to its library of resources: Thermal Bridging Considerations at Interface Conditions and Key Strategies for Bird Friendly Glazing.

Thermal Bridging Considerations at Interface Conditions

This presentation discusses how the installation of a fenestration system impacts the thermal performance and air- and water-resistance of a building envelope, highlighting future developments driven by codes and best practices. It will also cover the importance of component compatibility and construction considerations for design teams.

Dr. Thomas D. Culp, Ph.D., owner, Birch Point Consulting and NGA Energy Code Consultant explains, “Modern codes and standards like ASHRAE 90.1-2022 are now addressing thermal bridging requirements, which presents an added complication for designers. The concept seems daunting at first, but there are simplified ways to approach it. This resource will help architects and others understand the new requirements and solutions as it relates to glazing and fenestration in buildings.”

Key Strategies for Bird Friendly Glazing

This presentation explores the importance of birds and the sources of avian mortality, focusing on factors that increase the risk of bird collisions. It will cover bird-safe research on making glass more visible to birds, the effectiveness of bird-friendly glazing solutions, testing methods, and trends in legislation.

"This AIA-approved course will help architects and specifiers learn best practices to create safer buildings for birds, while earning continuing education credits," said Marc Deschamps, director of products and business development at Walker Glass Co., Ltd. "The course will elevate the architectural skills of attendees with cutting-edge knowledge that benefits both wildlife and urban environments."

Security Glazing for Schools

This upcoming presentation will address the different types and applications of security glazing being used in schools as means to mitigate various threats including forced entry and ballistic resistance.

"With more jurisdictions implementing changes to their local building codes to address the hardening of school buildings across communities, this presentation is needed now more than ever to educate architects, building owners and city officials on methods to improve school safety through the use of glazing," said Karen Wegert, NGA director, technical services.

A&D Outreach for Members

Thermal Bridging Considerations at Interface Conditions and Key Strategies for Bird Friendly Glazing are two of 12 accredited presentations available for member use. Individuals interested in utilizing NGA-developed presentations as part of outreach to the architecture and design community may email Sara Neiswanger to learn more.

“For those companies that wish to expand their reach to architects and others in the design community, but aren’t AIA-registered providers, these consensus-developed presentations are an excellent entry point,” explains Sara Neiswanger, associate director of industry engagement. “These presentations are an NGA member benefit, and we want to see them used widely to help educate stakeholders of the many ways glass and glazing products can be used effectively and creatively.”
